The Walkinstown roundabout is one of the busiest roundabouts in Dublin.
A lot of drivers, both experienced and learner, learn to fear and avoid it. But if you understand how it works, there is no need to fear it.
Not everyone is aware that there are actually three lanes marked out on the roundabout. There are six main roads joining onto the roundabout.
Use the general rule of roundabouts or the 12 o Clock rule. This rule states that if you imagine the roundabout as a clock face and you are approaching from the six o clock point and you are intending to turn left at the 9 o clock point or go straight ahead at the 12 o clock point, then use the left hand lane. If you intend to take any exit after the 12 o clock point then use the right hand lane.
On most approaches to the Walkinstown roundabout there are three lanes.If you give two exits to each lane, then straight away you will know which lane you should be in for the exit you wish to take. When signalling left you are Indicating that you intend to take the next exit off the Roundabout.

Starting from Walkinstown Avenue coming from the Ballyfermot direction.
To turn onto Walkinstown road (first exit)
Stay in the left lane on your approach to the roundabout and signal left to show other drivers that you intend to take the first exit.
To turn onto Cromwellsfort road (second exit)
Stay in the left lane as the exit you want to take is located before the 12 o clock point and do not signal as you approach the roundabout, only signal left as you pass the point of turning onto Walkinstown road (the exit before the exit you intend to take) to show other drivers that you intend to take the second exit.
To turn onto St. Peter's road (third exit)
Stay in the middle lane as you intend to take the exit at the 12 o clock point. Do not signal as you approach the roundabout, only signal left as you pass the point of turning onto Cromwellsfort road (the exit before the exit you intend to take) to show to other drivers that you intend to take the third exit.
To turn onto the Greenhills road (fourth exit)
Stay in the middle lane and signal right as you approach the roundabout. Keep your right signal on as you enter the roundabout, only signal left as you pass the point of turning onto St. Peter's road (the exit before the exit you intend to take) to show to other drivers that you intend to take the fourth exit.
To turn onto Ballymount road (fifth exit)
Stay in the right hand lane and signal right as you approach the roundabout. Keep your right signal on as you enter the roundabout, only signal left as you pass the point of turning onto the Greenhills road (the exit before the exit you intend to take) to show other drivers that you intend to take the fifth exit.
To drive around the roundabout and drive back down Walkinstown avenue (sixth exit)

To turn onto the Greenhills road (third exit)
