Car Fluid Levels

Check your cars fluid levels
It is recommended that you check your engine fluid levels on a weekly basis.
Wait until the engine has cooled down and your car is on a level surface.

Brake fluid:
There are minimum and maximum markers on the side of the brake fluid container. Make sure the fluid is kept between these markers. If it falls below them it may mean that there is a leak in the braking system or simply that your brakes have worn down and need to be replaced. In either case you should have it checked out by a qualified mechanic.

Coolant:
The coolant is designed to keep the engine from overheating.
There are minimum and maximum markers on the side of the coolant fluid container. Make sure the fluid is kept between these markers. If it falls below them it may mean that there is a leak in the coolant system. You should have it checked out by a qualified mechanic.

Power Steering Fluid:
There are two types of power steering.
Hydraulic and Electric
With hydraulic power assisted steering you will find a container in the engine bay marked "Power Steering"
If this container is opaque you will be able to see the fluid level and it should be between the minimum and maximum levels.
If it is not opaque you will have to unscrew the cap and measure the level of the fluid with the small dipstick attached to the cap.
The electric power assisted steering is an electric motor that the steering wheel sits into and the power is transferred through the steering column.

Window Washer fluid:
The window washer fluid will need to be checked regularly and topped up as needed.

Engine oil:
To check your engine oil, wait until your engine is cool and the car is on level ground. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a tissue or rag. Place it back into the engine and take it out again. Check the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks. If the level has dropped below the minimum mark you can add fresh oil through the oil cap. Let the oil settle in the engine and check the level again with the dipstick. Be very careful not to overfill the engine with oil.
